Rep. Roscoe Bartlett Works to Improve S-CHIP Health Insurance Program for Children

Washington, DC -- Congressman Roscoe Bartlett said, “I voted to create S-CHIP health insurance for children. I am a co-sponsor of the More Children, More Choice bill to improve the S-CHIP program.  This bill would cover poor children first; enroll U.S. citizens only, and protect against higher income families dropping private insurance for taxpayer-paid insurance.”

Republicans in the Congress created the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) in 1997 to provide health insurance for low-income children.  From the outset, the program was focused on needy children, and it has enjoyed bipartisan support in Congress for more than a decade.  On the House floor today, however, the Democratic Majority forced through legislation – written without Republican input, without legislative hearings, and without the opportunity for amendments.

H.R. 2, crafted by the House Democratic Leadership, would undermine the original intent of SCHIP by expanding the program to cover adults, illegal immigrants, and families already covered by private health insurance.  Congressman Bartlett voted against H.R. 2.
